The Particularly Civilized Behavior of a Lot of Southern Blacks

GG: Living in the deep south, I have noticed less sexually obnoxious behavior from the local Blacks. I used to live in the DC area and that shit was common there.

I wonder what the difference is.

Me: I hate to say it but they were terrorized so long by Jim Crow that I think it might have terrorized them into good behavior. I don’t wish to say anything good about Jim Crow, but it’s an ill wind that blows no good. I’ve known some Southern Whites who said this is the only way to treat Blacks that works. That’s paternalistic but maybe they’re right. Some exasperated Black leaders have been calling for a similar paternalistic approach in our big cities.

I’ve heard that in the South, certain types of places like hotels have Blacks, often older ones, who are almost unfailingly polite. I know of these folks. It’s not what you’d expect. The politeness is so extreme you can hardly believe you are seeing it. I hate to call them servant-like, but let’s face it, with customer service, servile behavio…
