Feminists and sadly women in general have recently been seen sporting about an extremely suspicious statistic: that only 2-8% of rape complaints are false complaints. This supposedly comes from the FBI, but my understanding is the FBI just pulled that out of its ass, and has no empirical basis for citing that figure.
To my knowledge there have only been two objective studies of false rape claims. Both were done in Midwest college towns in the early 1980’s. One study found that 42% of claims were fake, while the other put the figure at 50%. I’m not quite sure how one studies this at all because you need to talk to the cops themselves, and records for things like this are hard to come by because after all, these cases are not prosecuted.
Instead of false claims, a better way to describe these bad claims is to describe them as “junk” rape accusations. That is, we don’t know if they are false or true. The cases are so confused that we can’t tell if there was any rape or not, and hence nothing is filed. I was on a board once discussing this matter when a cop appeared on the board. He said that in his city, ~95% of rape claims are what he called junk and result in no charges being filed.
In half of those cases, the woman can’t keep her story straight. You can’t file with a case like that. It doesn’t mean she’s lying. All we know is she can’t keep her story straight, so there can be no arrest. The other half of cases involved a live-in or married couple where the woman makes in the context of heavy drug or alcohol use by both parties. The combination of a live-in relationship and serious intoxication by both parties results in a junk rape case; that is, no one can tell if she’s lying or not.
This is in part why police are so dubious when women come forward with rape complaints.
There are some truths here.
In my opinion, there is a rape epidemic in the US. These cases are usually acquaintance rapes consisting of a young woman aged 18-25. She typically goes alone to the place of a man or even multiple men. She’s often the only woman at a place where a number of men are present. She then proceeds to get seriously drunk, not uncommonly to the point of passing in and out of consciousness.
And as you guessed it, she gets raped. It’s often a multiple rape or a gang rape. The woman typically doesn’t file charges. She obviously knowingly put herself in a very dubious position which she could have foreseen may well have resulted in a rape. Now those men should not have raped her. I don’t think I would have. But a lot of men don’t have my values.
Bottom line is there is a vast amount of rape in this country.
At the same time, there are also a Hell of a lot of false and junk rape complaints which result in no arrest.
And both of these things are true at the same time.

Good article Robert
Good balance on both problems.
Do you remember "Mattress Girl" The Columbia U student who claimed a guy raped her and tried to have him arrested weeks or months later. The police and district atty would not prosecute. She protested by walking around campus with a mattress on her back - she even made this her thesis for graduation and the school let he do it for credit.
She also made a video that reenacts her alleged rape.
