On Writing

I’m not sure other writers and other artists compete. Perhaps some do. If I had to compete with other writers to keep my job, I’d walk out the door.

I'm just trying to write good stuff, not beat the other writers. That seems like a serious rut because a lot of writers are better than I am, and it would make me depressed. I knew some good artists and they were also perfectionists who were never good enough either.

I consider myself a bit of a literary author, and I have even published fiction in literary journals! But I’m not a very competitive person, and I know full well that there are many writers who kick my ass when it comes to writing.

That said, I think I'm good and everyone agrees. I know I’m good but I play it down. I say:

I fail at most everything but at least I can write.
