I had to go to the library to make a photocopy. There are a couple of women who work there, but once I saw one of them at the doctors’ office with a kid and asked her if that was her kid. She played deaf and I had to repeat it a few times before she said yes. (1)
Playing deaf is a highly evolved social skill, and I think most people haven’t figured it out very well.
I just think it is mean behavior and I think if someone does it too much they’re either not much of a friend or they’re so uptight and hung up on social rules that I don’t want to deal with them. (2) The other one was simply never very friendly.
They both smiled at me with these very wan smiles (too wan really), but they’ve both pissed me off, the one by playing deaf, and the other by just being a bitch all the time, so I completely ignored both of them and looked right at them but refused to smile back.
I don’t see why I should reward people for acting like assholes.
